Captain Euan's Welcome Letter 2007

Captain’s Welcome

January 07
Dear Member:
The committee and I would like to welcome you to Brunston Castle Golf Club for the 2007 golfing year. It is a great honour for me to take on the role of club captain and I look forward to my year in office immensely. This year I view my term in office, as a period of consolidation and reflection and my main aim is to build on the foundation work that past captain Jim has established to drive the club and its members forward.
The past year the club has encountered some challenges both internally and externally with a change in personnel, membership numbers and competitions to name but a few. But throughout all the difficult challenges last year the club had several success stories. Throughout the year the club competitions were highly supported by club members with a wide variation in prizewinners. The club championships for the gents and ladies sections were strongly competitive and were won by Billy McCulloch and Cindy McEwan respectively, congratulations to you both. The inter club matches proved again to be popular with a 5 – 1 win at home against Turnberry and a 4 – 2 loss away to Port Patrick, both of which were enjoyable days and were thoroughly enjoyed by the members participating.
The member and guest day achieved a full quota of competitors all challenging for the title and prizes at every hole. The event was strongly sponsored by local businesses and individuals, many of who were club members. May I again thank the sponsors on behalf of the club for their donations to a highly successful event and I hope I can count on their kind donations for this event in the forthcoming year.
The prize giving dinner and dance was a memorable occasion with the majority of the trophy winners present and with 93 people attending in total which was truly worthy of the effort of the members competing and winning the trophies and for the effort and expense of the club in organizing the event.
Last summer saw Scotland having glorious summer weather, which combined with the dedication of the green keeping staff, enhanced the quality of the golf course condition to the delight of the members in the summer season. Unfortunately in the past several months the weather has turned for the worst and this has been reflected in the course condition with the bunkers becoming hard and flooded and certain areas of the course becoming overgrown due to restrictions on grass cutting caused by heavy rain and soft ground. Last year also saw the appointment of a new head green keeper, Mr. David McOrwan, who replaced Dougie Drain midway through the year due to Dougie moving on to pastures new. The committee and I look forward to collaborating with the new head green keeper David on issues regarding the course condition to ensure the course flourishes in the forthcoming year for the benefit of members and guests.
The past year the committee has asked for all comments and queries regarding the course, competitions or any other general enquires to be mentioned by members and put into the secretary’s box or passed to a committee member in writing. This method of communication has proved to be successful throughout the past year with several queries and suggestions being passed to the committee by members. May I again ask for your cooperation in communicating your enquires through this process to the committee in the forthcoming year. Remember the committee and I are here for you, the members. If you don’t inform us of a suggestion, problem or enquiry we don’t know about it and can’t act on it on your behalf and for the benefit of the other club members. Usually if a problem arises throughout the year that is troubling you it is bothering some other members too. So please continue to contact us through this reporting mechanism to allow the committee to act on your behalf and resolve your problem.
May I close by wishing you every success in this forthcoming golfing year and I hope you participate in the competitions and events within the club and most of all enjoy being part of Brunston Castle Golf Club in 2007.
Euan McCulloch
Captain 2007
